Serve Rally & Score
Serve, rally, score is the slogan the ITF uses to explain how tennis can best be introduced to starter players.
It is important that coaches make the first experience of the starter player positive. The ITF believes that getting starter players to play the game (serving, rallying and scoring) from the first lesson is vital in ensuring an enjoyable experience that they’ll want to continue.
Introduction taken from the ITF Play Tennis Manual
In modern day coaching one of the primary roles of the coach is to organise players to play tennis. In the case of starter players this means getting them to serve, rally and score from the first lesson. The coaches’ ability to teach technique is not as important in starter tennis as their ability to communicate, to entertain and to organise the lesson. It is important that the coach uses the appropriate ball, racket and court size to set up activities and practices that ensure players are serving, rallying and scoring and having fun. In many cases this will involve coaches introducing tennis to children and adults using one of the slower red orange and green balls on a reduced court with smaller rackets for young children.
The first lesson should be both active and entertaining for the players and whilst teaching technique remains important, the ITF recommends that coaches focus first on getting players playing the game and give the necessary and relevant technical and tactical instructions to help the players to play the game even better. Technique becomes the focus at a later stage in individual lessons.
Stay & Play
For ages 3-9 the internationally recognized Play & Stay equipment is used. Play & stay is a highly specialized program where the balls are appropriate for the different levels. They bounce at the correct height for the relevant ages. They are red, green and yellow.
Portable nets are used and for this program the lessons can be taught most successfully on grass and a driveway for example.
Play & Stay is the base of tennis in the International Tennis Federation. It has been established world wide as the best way to successfully introduce younger children to the game of tennis. All technical strokes are identical to tennis, but the slower ball, smaller racquet and court allow younger children to succeed at the sport. Famous players such as Bjorn Borg and Stefan Edberg came through this program in their formative years. As a balls skills program, it is unequaled for equipping youngsters for all associated ball games.
Sports stars such as Ernie Els (golf), Naas Botha (rugby) and Kepler Wessels (cricket) all come from a tennis background.

About Us
Owner (& Coach)
Michele Joyce
Michele Joyce started playing tennis at the age of eight when she joined one of the largest tennis academies in South Africa. After playing and being coached for her whole school career, she was headhunted by the academy to train as a coach while she was a student at the University of Witwatersrand. She started working as a group coach with pupils ranging from age three to adults, for five hours per day from the tender age of nineteen and developed a passion for coaching groups and sharing her love for tennis with others. She went on to arrange three international tennis tours and train alongside one of the top tennis coaches in America who now runs Australian Tennis. Along the way, the was the manager of the USSASA Girls High School Provincial Team in Gauteng, and the chairlady of Girls High School Tennis in Gauteng. She also arranged for sponsorship of transport for teams in underprivileged areas to participate in school leagues. She went on to start her own coaching business, the International Tennis Academy, which she ran very successfully for 23 years. She then raised her qualification by obtaining her International Tennis Federation (ITF) instructor certification, and now she is offering to share her love and skills in tennis with beginner and intermediate players through the Maths and Tennis Tutor at various venues in Gauteng. She is a mother and a private school mathematics teacher and thus an educator at heart, and she is enthusiastic on the court. She coaches personally but also works alongside internationally certified coaches. Her friendly and bubbly personality makes it easy for her to interact with people of all backgrounds, and she is excited to meet you! She has been coaching since she was 19 years old and is now over 50 ! I am an ITF level one instructor and I specialize in teaching beginners how to play tennis. Our holiday clinic programs are a wonderful way to learn. We also do private house coaching where we come to you. Progression and growth
Progressing from red, to orange, to green…
It is important that players only progress to the next stage when they are able to control the ball and implement tactics effectively at their current Tennis10s stage. If they move up too soon they may develop poor technique and lose confidence and interest. Parents and teachers should understand that learning to play the game of tennis / compete is a gradual process and as children progress through the 3 stages of Tennis10s, parents and teachers should encourage the child to become more independent. Parents and teachers should also try to focus on how the child is developing, on their performance and most importantly on their enjoyment.
ITA Philosophy - Tips for parents and teachers
Support
- Allow your child to play in the appropriate stage of Tennis10s so that they can gain confidence and better enjoy playing the game.
- It is best not to watch every match that your child plays as this can place pressure to them.
- Stick to your role as the parent and do not try to become the coach.
- Playing matches is an important part of a player’s development and your child should be encouraged by you to compete as well as have lessons.
- Be aware of your child’s capabilities and avoid comparing them with others players and their development.
- Be aware that at this age results are not so important. The most important aspect is that they like playing tennis and that they play lots of matches.
Encourage
- Encourage good behaviour in lessons and matches.
- Do not tolerate bad behaviour, cheating or bad manners.
- Encourage your child to learn independence.
- Avoid making them depend too much on you.
- Focus on effort instead of results. Never ask “Did you win?” It is better to ask “How did you play?” or “Did you have fun?” Make them realise you are more interested in them than the result.
Respect
- Help your child to understand that showing respect for the rules, opponents, and officials, is all part of tennis.
- Respect the opponents, their parents and coaches, and of course the competition officials.
- Always applaud both players.
- Your child’s coach has the expertise and they should be respected and appreciated by you.
